Descripción

Dictionary of the Little Masters of Painting (1820 - 1920), by G. Schurr and P. Cabanne, Ed. de l'Amateur, 8 inches x 11 inches ( 21 cm x 27.5 cm ), hardcover book with box with 1080 color pages

This great hardcover book with 1080 color pages is a valuable iconographic and biographical source with more than 4000 "Petits Maîtres" painters of the 19th century, Little Masters of Painting, French and foreigners who might be the values of tomorrow.
Real monument to the art of the 19th and early 20th century, this encyclopedic dictionary is an indispensable tool for the researcher the amateur. It offers the iconographic source the richest on the subject, and ranks among the most accomplished art books.
Forgotten in museums reserves of the French provinces or Paris, stored in attics, banned by the good spirits, the little masters of painting of the 19th century found themselves rehabilitated brilliantly by the opening of the "Musée d'Orsay" in the mid eighties.
The art historian Gérald Schurr did not wait for this official blessing to engage in a patient researcher work.
In 1995, revisiting 4000 of these "Petits Maîtres", Pierre Cabanne sheds new light on one of the most important periods of the history of art complementing biographical information and expanding his research to many French and foreign painters.

This new edition of more than 1000 pages was the subject of a major revision of iconography: hundreds of black and white documents have been replaced by color representations, many minor works held in private collections have been replaced by a museum scenography, and finally, basic corrections were laid on the text.

The French texts are written by Gérald Schurr and Pierre Cabanne.
