This hardcover book with 480 full colour pages couleur presents the French religious painting of the 18th century.
18th century painting is often likened to Watteau's fête galante, Boucher's odalisques or even David's neo-antique painting. However, the Age of Enlightenment in France was also the period of the apogee of great religious history painting.
An emanation of royal policy, a defense of the Jansenist opposition or a standard brandished against philosophical ideas, the altar painting was often designed to respond to the religious troubles of its time and embodied them in a spirited style, which renewed with panache the manner of the 17th century.
Richly illustrated, this book deals as much with the decor of the buildings of Paris and the large provincial urban centers as with the modest rural parishes.
It focuses on the careers and specific techniques of religious painters, without forgetting the role and personality of the patrons. The collection sheds new light on how men of the Age of Enlightenment viewed sacred painting and the place it held in Ancien Régime society.
